A 5.6 Magnitude Earthquake hit Jamaica, The Strongest Quake to hit the Country in 31 Years
Jamaica’s Prime Minister Hon. Andrew Holness said the earthquake hit the country on Monday. Media reports say Jamaica was rocked by a 5.6 magnitude earthquake at about 10:53 am. According to ‘Google Alert’, the quake was also felt in Haiti, Cuba and some minor outlying islands of the United States. Reports have flooded in to the Jamaica media from people across the country who reported damage to buildings and infrastructure. Kingston based University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, students told the news that they panicked when the quake struck as they felt the building shaking. Meanwhile, head of the Earthquake Unit at the UWI Mona campus, Professor Simon Mitchell, says people should brace for aftershocks. The head of Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement says Police personnel will be dispatched to direct traffic at intersections where street lights have been affected by the tremor.
