On Tuesday, President Donald Trump said the White House has “tremendous power” to run U.S. cities “when we have to” in response to a question about New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist. When asked, “How do you want Republican voters in NYC to vote in the upcoming mayoral election, should they vote for Eric Adams, should they vote for Curtis Sliwa?” After he criticized Mamdani as a “disaster” who has sold New Yorkers a “good line of bull—-,” he noted that Sliwa, the Republican candidate, “runs every four years” and acknowledged Democrat Eric Adams, the current officeholder, is running as an independent. After outlining the upcoming mayoral race, President Trump responded, in part, “But I can tell you this, I used to say we will not ever be a socialist country. If a communist gets elected to run New York, it can never be the same, but we have tremendous power at the White House to run places when we have to. We could run DC. We’re looking at DC … we don’t want crime in DC. We would run it so good … we’re thinking about doing it, to be honest with you.” He continued, “New York City will work properly.
