Hospital patient is suffocated in fight with security guards after he came to the ER with a bullet wound
A coroner's exam has officially ruled a patient's asphyxiation death a homicide, after the patient died following an altercation with hospital security guards. The victim, Donald Keith Smith, 48, of Greenville, South Carolina, died at 10.23am on Monday at Greenville Memorial Hospital, according to WSPA. Smith was admitted to the hospital's ER for treatment of a gunshot wound in his arm the previous day. At one point, he became 'agitated and combative,' so hospital staff called for security. 'Without touching this patient our officer was assaulted, struck in the face two times. To protect himself and because there were patients and medical staff in the immediate area, this officer attempted to subdue that patient,' Randy Harrison, president of American Security, told WSPA.
