Tropical Storm Nate kills 22 across Central America
Tropical Storm Nate which has wrecked havoc across Central America, bringing heavy rains, across the region, killing 22 people. Experts believe the storm’s path would carry it toward a potential landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast as a hurricane over the weekend. The newly formed Tropical Storm Nate’s path led to officials in Louisiana ordering some people to evacuate coastal areas and barrier islands. Evacuations began at some offshore oil platforms in the Gulf too. A voluntary evacuation was called in the barrier island town of Grand Isle south of New Orleans. Officials in New Orleans outlined steps to bolster the city's pump and drainage system after flash floods in the summer revealed the weaknesses in that system. In a press statement, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement's New Orleans office said that as of midday Thursday, six production platforms, out of the 737 manned platforms in the Gulf, had been evacuated.
